Faith is the substance of things hoped for (and the subsequent actions
that manifest an attempt to realize those hopes) - and living without
hope is a terrible thing. Therefore, faith is necessary - but the "in
what" is the key.
Every person on earth needs to define her own hopes and "exercise faith" in
them, whether that be related to a post-mortal life or whether it be
focused on family, friends and this life - or both.

No, Glenn. It's akin to putting away childish things and owning your own faith. Mine is in Christ, the resurrection and the concept of exaltation (core Mormon theology), but each person needs to live according to the dictates of her own conscience - to determine what constitutes her own hopes in the unseen.
